What do you think of when you think of a cowboy or cowgirl?

Quality. Trust. Dedication. Tradition.

All of these qualities are still alive and well today in the spirit of cowboys and cowgirls everywhere. For that reason, Shorty's Caboy Hattery has dedicated itself to these principals. A new western hat from Shorty can be worn with pride knowing that attention to every detail has been paid.

No detail or consideration is too insignificant for Shorty and her team not to take seriously. Each custom western hat is hand crafted to the customer's specifications, most by Shorty personally, using timeless techniques passed from generation to generation of master hatters.

If you are thinking about purchasing your first custom hat, there are a number of questions that you should have answered. There are also a number of terms with which you should be familiar. If you have questions about custom hats, their care and a list of terms, please visit our FAQ's and Terms page.

You may actually want to start there, before browsing the rest of Shorty's and any other custom hatter's Web site. The purchase of a quality custom hat is an investment. You owe it to yourself to know the terms associated with custom hats and the most frequently asked questions. If any of your questions aren't answered on our FAQ's and Terms page, please feel free to stop in our shop when in Oklahoma City, e-mail them to , or call us at the bottom of this page.

Shorty's Caboy Hattery is Quality

Shorty starts with the highest quality beaver fur "blanks" available to the custom hat business, whether it be a 20X, 100X or some grade between. Every hat has a different sized crown and brim. Crown heights normally range between five and seven inches (a five inch crown would be typical for a "Cattleman's Crease" and a seven inch crown would be used for a typical "Buckaroo" crease.

The height of the crown determines the "crease" for that particular "blank". The entire crown shaping and brim creasing on a true custom western hat require the hatter's actual hands to create. It takes hands with years of practice to create a custom western hat of Shorty's quality. It is a time consuming and tedious job but the end results are quality cowboy hats that, with proper care, can be worn for many years to come. For that matter, Shorty's 100X pure beaver felt hats are destined to become treasured heirloom items, passed from generation to generation of cowboys and cowgirls.

Shorty's Caboy Hattery is Trust

Shorty takes personal pride in each hat. Unlike other hat makers who turn out hundred or thousands of western hats a day, Shorty only turns out hundreds to a thousand, at most, hats per year! For that reason, you can place your trust in Shorty to build you a hat that you will wear with pride. Many of her customers will wear nothing on their heads but a Shorty's Custom Hat.

Corporate CEO's to Rodeo Champions and Horse Show Professionals and Amateur Exhibitors, to some of Country Music's biggest stars come back, year after year, to update their collection to include the latest colors and styles as trends in the western wear, fashion and show arenas change. Shorty spent a number of years in the rodeo arena before "retiring" to the hat business. This is another reason that her customers trust her. She's been there and done it and understands what it takes to be a leader, in whatever endeavor people choose. Another reason Shorty's customers trust her so much is that she has built her entire business on one principal: Total Customer Satisfaction.

Shorty's Caboy Hattery is Dedication

There are only 60 or so custom hatters still practicing this dieing art form. Sure, it would be much easier to "sell out" and continue making hats the "new fashioned", mass-production way...But that isn't how Shorty believes things have to be and it's certainly not how Shorty's Caboy Hattery is run. She has spent a large portion of her life committed to learning the art of custom hat making. She is also very particular in only surrounding herself with people who hold this same regard for tradition and dedication. She is not only dedicated to her chosen art form, but also dedicated to appearing at some of the largest events in the Rodeo World and Horse Industry.
